The undefeated Bald Eagles attained what was described in the yearbook as “near-selection to compete in the NAIA Holiday Bowl” after their eight consecutive wins, including one over rival Lycoming College. from Columbia and write 52 books on such subjects as health, wellness and athletics. Somehow along the way, he found time to earn a Ph.D. He was head basketball coach at the Interamerican University at Puerto Rico for six years, then spent three years at Southern Connecticut University, ending up in university administration at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond where he stayed for three decades.
He didn’t stay long, and went to Canada, to the Montreal Alouettes camp. “Nowadays they send a guy in to cut the toenails of the kicker before every field goal,” Big Train said, “but we thought fresh legs was a good-looking girl from Poughkeepsie.”ĭintiman, an All-State halfback, was drafted by the Baltimore Colts. “You played offense and defense and never came out of the game.” Like his teammates, he remembered what some might say was a different game - “the last year before sissy football,” he said. This led to discrimination because fellows who were bald couldn’t play, he said with a grin. He described the suspension helmets that were typical then: “They did a study on these helmets, and they found 95 percent of the protection came from your hair.” George “Big Train” Dintiman spoke for the 1957 team and had the audience rolling with laughter. The team was inducted into the Gridiron Greats this year, as were individual players from later years: Jim Dressler of the Lock Haven University Class of 1980, Dave Laudeman - ’90, William “Bill” Peterson - ’86, Terry Szucs - ’75, and Robert “Tommy” Thompson - ’68. He and eight of his teammates were feted at the banquet at the Red Eye Center, sponsored by the Gray Eagles Football Club. “I just absolutely love teaching,” he said.
He taught for 35 years and has volunteered with the state Fish Commission for 26 years and the Game Commission for a whopping 51 years. Like many of those honored at the Gridiron Greats Banquet and Induction Ceremony held Saturday night, Deibert went on to coach - in his case, seven different sports.
